Netflix has spent years crushing movie theaters – turns out, it kind of needs them now

Image
One of the more fascinating trends to watch these days is the way big digitally focused tech companies are incrementally moving back into the physical world, and into the realm of competitors they differentiated themselves against and crushed in the first place. Think, for example, Amazon's investment in brick-and-mortar retail, with its bookstores and grocery ventures. The company turned founder Jeff Bezos into the wealthiest man on the planet partly by all of us splurging on e-commerce and buying things online that we can ship straight to our door. And yet, here's the company making a play for the boring, unexciting world of physical retail stores. A similar thing is happening at Netflix. Continue reading... Saturn’s auroras sure do look pretty

Image
Here on Earth, auroras are pretty neat sight to see. The phenomenon, commonly called the "Northern Lights," is fairly well understood by scientists. They occur when charged particles from the Sun are funneled towards Earth's poles by our planet's magnetic field. Those particles then interact with various gasses in Earth's atmosphere and create a brilliant light show in the night sky. We might think of auroras as being special to Earth, but in reality they are possible on any planet with a magnetic field and an atmosphere. Saturn happens to be one of those planets, and researchers using the Hubble Space Telescope recently observed what auroras look like on Saturn's north pole. Continue reading... Google plans to   revamp Wear OS, its smartwatch operating system (OS), through an update that will enhance the functionality and design of Wear OS smartwatches, which the company plans to roll out over the next month. The news marks Google's first major overhaul to its smartchwatch OS since  rebranding  Android Wear as Wear OS this past March.  The improved Wear OS will help users better navigate their smartwatches and fast-track access to information and suggestions through Google Assistant: Notifications will be smarter and more convenient. Users will now be able to swipe up on the device to browse through a stream of notifications. This represents a significant improvement from the current version as notifications are paganized — meaning users have to swipe five times to view five notific

Meet the Democratic businessman who wants to beat Trump in 2020 and give every American a basic income: 'Donald Trump gives entrepreneurs a bad name'

Image
Andrew Yang, a long-time entrepreneur-turned-politician, wants President Donald Trump's job in 2020.  He believes in a universal basic income, and supports reforms to prepare the United States for the revolutions in artificial intelligence and autonomy still to come. He's probably also the first candidate to accept donations in the form of cryptocurrency.  If you ask presidential candidate Andrew Yang to talk about the future, he’ll start with with truck drivers. The 43-year-old entrepreneur-turned-politician is a ball of statistics on the pending driverless car revolution. Autonomous vehicles are already on the road today, poised to rise across private and commercial sectors. This will see personal convenience soar to new heights, but will lay carnage to the contemporary trucking industry in the process. “The average truck driver is a 49-year-old male with a high school education and one year of college. There are 3.5 million of them in America; it’s the most common

This is the most covert spy camera we’ve ever seen, and it probably shouldn’t be legal

The DareTang HD 1080P WiFi Hidden Camera Alarm Clock is by far the most covert hidden camera we’ve ever come across. It looks just like a regular old alarm clock, but it hides a high-quality 1080p camera that can record onto an SD card or stream to your phone. It also has motion detection support to alert you when there’s movement in range of the device, and it has night vision too. You definitely shouldn’t do anything creepy or illegal with it, but if you’re looking for something like a hidden nanny cam then it doesn’t get much more "hidden" than this. A big fake Moon is slowly making its way around the Earth

Image
You probably don't spare much thought for the Moon. I mean it's there in the night sky, being all bright and cool and whatnot, but unless you have a telescope you can't enjoy all the intricate detail from your vantage point here on Earth. Artist Luke Jerram's Moon is a whole lot smaller than the one that shows up in the sky every night, but it's much easier to appreciate, and it might be coming to a location near you. The massive exhibit, called Museum of the Moon , has been slowly making the rounds for well over a year now. Despite being just a scale model of something that we can all see almost every night, it's gaining a whole lot of attention. Continue reading... Apple is offering free repairs, but you have to mail away your phone.  Apple disclosed on Friday that "a very small percentage" of iPhone 8 smartphones have a "manufacturing defect" that can freeze the screen, make the device restart unexpectedly, or even cause it to not turn on.  If you own an iPhone 8, you can check whether or not you're affected by putting your phone's serial number into a web form at Apple's website . The good news is that Apple will repair any affected iPhone 8 for free, by replacing its logic board.  "Affected units were sold between September 2017 and March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and the U.S.," writes Apple. Given that the iPhone 8 was only introduced in Sept
