A professor and his students turned an observatory into a giant R2-D2, and it’s amazing

Image
People who study science day in and day out usually have some fondness for science fiction, and Professor Hubert Zitt is no exception. Zitt, who lectures at Germany's University of Kaiserslautern, happens to be a huge fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, and when he looked at the Zweibrücken Observatory he clearly saw what it resembled. The dull, grey observatory served an important purpose for scientists, but it was also a bit drab looking. So, with the help of painter Klaus Ruffing and some of Zitt's own students, the tall dome got an extreme makeover and now it sports some serious Star Wars flair. Continue reading... OnePlus 7’s rumored all-screen design looks incredible in these renders

Image
OnePlus released its first smartphone back in 2014, and the company had a fantastic strategy at that time: release a phone that offered flagship specs and performance at half the price of a flagship phone. Since the OnePlus One launched with prices starting at $299, OnePlus smartphones have gotten far more expensive. In fact, the cheapest current-generation OnePlus 6T you can buy costs $579. But if you look more closely at that $579 phone, you'll find that it packs a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen, a flagship Snapdragon processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a dual-lens camera system on the back. A similarly equipped Galaxy S10+ costs $1,000, and the cheapest iPhone XS Max you can buy costs $1,100. In other words, OnePlus is still making phones that are just as powerful and impressive as flagships from big-name brands, and it's still charging about half as much money. In 2019, OnePlus is expected to release three new flagship smartphones, the first of which is the OnePlus 7. An

As 5G networks become a reality in 2019 and 2020, the new standard will further increase the appeal of cellular solutions in the areas where it's available.  And, as 5G-supported hardware rolls out, companies can use the network to support their IoT business. But the excitement around 5G doesn't mean it should be selected above all other options whenever available. In fact, in some cases, it's not even the best among cellular solutions. Companies that use IoT devices and providers of IoT-based services and solutions need to be discerning in their determinations of whe

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Mar. 31)

Image
As we noted when Netflix shared its slate of releases for April, this month isn't packed with quite as many obvious hits as we're used to seeing, but most of the exciting additions will be arriving in the first week. That includes the return of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the return of the beloved David Attenborough, who will narrate the Netflix original Our Planet (from the same team that did BBC's Planet Earth series). There are also over two dozen pieces of licensed content dropping on April 1st, including Deliverance ,  I Am Legend , Pineapple Express , The Fifth Element , and an odd, but compelling, selection of horror movies. Unfortunately, there are a fair number of departures as well, so say goodbye to a bunch of James Bond flicks. Continue reading... Jeff Bezos' investigator thinks Saudi Arabia hacked his cell phone — here's how it could have happened (AMZN)

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' personal security consultant Gavin de Becker believes Saudi Arabia had access to Bezos' phone, according to an op-ed published by de Becker on Saturday in The Daily Beast. While de Becker didn't say how the Saudis gained access to his phone, the country has been accused in the past of using advanced spyware to track its adversaries. Some of that spyware comes from NSO Group, an Israeli company valued at $1 billion that sells technology that can track texts, emails, calls, apps and location data from "the air without leaving a trace," according to a New York Times investigation. A $1 billion Israeli intelligence startup accused of helping Saudi Arabia track its adversaries could be the key to new assertions from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' security consultant Gavin de Becker. In an op-ed published in The Daily Beast on Saturday , de Becker said his team concluded that Saudi Arabia  "had access to Bezos' phone and gained private

'Dumbo' wins the weekend box office, but performs worse than expected

Image
Disney's "Dumbo" took in an estimated $45 million over the weekend. That's below industry projections. Jordan Peele's "Us" came in second place with $33.6 million, and now has earned over $100 million domestically (the movie was made for $20 million). Peele is the first African-American writer-director to have multiple movies gross $100 million (the other being "Get Out"). Matthew McConaughey had the worst opening weekend of his career for a wide release movie with "The Beach Bum" only taking in $1.8 million. That's under his previous all-time low that happened earlier this year with the $4.4 million opening for "Serenity." Disney's "Dumbo" is having a bumpy takeoff. It's uncommon for a Disney IP to not hit its industry box office projections or surpass it, but that's what's happened to the latest live-action remake of the Disney classic animated movie.
