The issues with discoverability, monetization, and retention, and how to solve them

The voice app ecosystem is booming. In the US, the number of Alexa skills alone surpassed 25,000 in January 2018, up from just 7,000 the previous January, in categories ranging from music streaming services, to games, to connected home tools. As voice platforms continue to gain footing in homes via smart speakers — connected devices  powered primarily by artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled voice assistants —  the opportunity for voice apps is becoming more profound. However, as observed with the rise of mobile apps in the late 2000s, any new digital ecosystem will face significant growing pains, and voice apps are no exception. Thanks to the visual-free format of voice apps, discoverability, monetization, and retention are proving particularly problematic in this nascent space. This is creating a

Google efficiently mocks both Macs and PCs in one Chromebook ad

Image
In a first for Google’s Chromebook division, the company took a massive hit at its main rivals, Apple and Microsoft, in an ad that mocks the various errors users might encounter on Macs and Windows 10 laptops compared to the smoothness of Chromebook notebooks. The commercial arrives just in time for the busy back-to-school shopping season, when plenty of people shop for new school gear, including Chromebooks. And Google, of course, sells one of the most expensive Chromebooks out there, the Pixelbook that was launched just last year. On top of that, many Windows laptop vendors also sell plenty of Chrome OS devices. Continue reading... Sony’s new high-end TVs will take your Netflix addiction to the next level

Image
Sony had an extra card up its sleeve to coincide with the unveiling of two new TV models that the company first teased at CES, a card it revealed today. Sony Electronics president and COO Mike Fasulo at an event in New York City showed off a new feature exclusive to Sony's new Master Series A9F OLED and Z9F LCD TVs -- a special Netflix-watching mode the company says is comparable to watching on a master monitor used in motion picture production studios. Would you take $550 a month from Lyft to ditch your car?

Image
Uber and Lyft have famously destroyed the taxi industry by enabling anyone with a not-too-beat-up Toyota Corolla to start carrying passengers for money. But it's also no secret that down the line, both companies want to challenge traditional car ownership as a concept. For Uber, that means heavy investment (by whatever means!) in autonomous vehicles. For Lyft, that means a publicity stunt that will give 100 individuals in Chicago $550 a month in transport credits to give up their personal vehicle. Continue reading... MoviePass adds a new restriction: 'Every showtime may not be available' on the app (HMNY)

Image
MoviePass is no longer guaranteeing that every movie showtime will be available on the app, CEO Mitch Lowe told customers on Tuesday.  The news comes less than a day after MoviePass announced plans to hike prices up to $15/month, and make big-ticket movies like "The Meg" and "Christopher Robin" unavailable for at least the first few weeks after release.  Lowe also says that MoviePass customer support may be limited in the near future, as it prioritizes customers who are already at the theater. MoviePass is adding a new limitation: Not every showtime for every single movie is guaranteed to be supported by the app. "Showtimes that are offered through our service will vary from day to day, and every showtime may not be available," MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe wrote in an email to customers on Tuesday afternoon. Previously, the service would support every 2D movie showing at all compatible theaters. This news comes less than a day after MoviePass announce

The rising tide of messaging platforms — and how brands, businesses, and publishers can capitalize

Image
This is a preview of a research report from Business Insider Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about Business Insider Intelligence, click here . Nearly every major messaging platform has spent the past few years rolling out tools to attract new users and give businesses tools to reach those users. The consumer-oriented products are working: The combined total monthly active user (MAU) count of the top 4 messaging apps has grown to 4.1 billion in 2018, with the top three messaging apps touting user bases of 1 billion or more. Not only are these consumer products drawing in more users, but they're effectively increasing the time consumers are spending within messaging apps. The average daily time US consumers spent in a messaging app in 2017 was 10 minutes, up 15.2% from 8 minutes in 2016, according to eMarketer. That 10 minutes is expected to grow to 11 this year, and 12 in 2019 (see chart). This large and engaged consumer base is a p

Hubble captures photo of massive nearby galaxy that is still growing

Image
For most of us, staring up at the night sky only lets us see the brightest nearby stars, and if you're anywhere near a city you probably won't see much else thanks to pesky light pollution. The powerful lens on the Hubble Space Telescope doesn't have to worry about any of that, and NASA can take gorgeous photos like the one you see above whenever it feels like it. What you're seeing here is a nearby galaxy called NGC 6744. It's not a particularly interesting name, but that doesn't make the colossal galaxy any less awesome. It's up to twice as wide as our own Milky Way, and according to NASA it's still a very active place. Continue reading... Larry Page and Sergey Brin's Google Camp is as star studded as ever and most definitely not an 'actual summer camp' (GOOG, GOOGL)

Image
Celebrities from entertainment and sports are guests of Google Camp 2018 The annual event, organized by Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, is taking place in Sicily. Basketball legend Michael Jordan is rumored to be attending this year.  The “conference” known as Google Camp is not your typical sleep away. This is not the Catskills. Few campers are likely to careen down any ziplines or go tubing. This is an ultra-exclusive, super-secret, three-day gathering in Sicily of elite actors, fashion designers, media tycoons, models, pop stars and athletes hosted by Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Certainly, the name can be misleading. “My dumbass thought it was an actual summer camp sponsored by Google for really, really smart kids,” one person posted to Twitter on Tuesday. What actually is accomplished at these annual events, typically held in sunny and sandy locals, is not altogether clear. In past years, attendees have toured local ruins , enjoyed su
